Laundry Love People (LLP) is the initiative being actualized in Isla Vista, California with the simple intention to care for those struggling financially by offering aid in the form of clean laundry. LLP Isla Vista serves those living in shelters, motels, cars, garages, on the streets, as well as others experiencing financial hardship.
How Does it Work?
On the last Tuesday of each month, LLP takes over Regal Laundromat in downtown Isla Vista from 5:30pm-7:30pm to wash and dry clothes for all persons in need. LLP provides the quarters, detergent and friendly faces.
Why Laundry?
For those living below the poverty line, washing clothes presents both a logistical problem and a financial hardship. By assisting in washing clothes, we can help relieve one fiscal weight for those who struggle daily to make ends meet, thus allowing our guests to redirect their finances to food, medical care, school supplies, etc.
Providing the means to clean clothes is merely one thing we can do to help those living in poverty in our community. It is a way to get to know those in our community who live in oppressive poverty face to face, offering our ears to listen and our hands to serve. It is a way to remain connected to human beings in our community who are so often overlooked. It is one way we can offer tangible and transformative relief.
The Network
LLP is an open-source cooperative created by JustOne. As such, LLP Isla Vista is a part of a larger network of individuals, businesses, community groups, and faith communities who are dedicated to washing and drying clothes for people all around the US. There are now over 50 LLP’s around the US. The idea was developed after a conversation with a homeless friend who conveyed the basic need for clean laundry.
